When people look at certain things about me, like my physique or one of my creative outlets they will often praise me simply because it is not an area they have developed themselves. But the truth of the matter is that I realise that I could be a lot farther ahead at this point if I’d started off better years ago. It was not until into my thirties when I discovered the power of doing two specific things to work towards mastery of any field:

1. Learn to be analytical

The more analytical you can become, generally the better you will understand it and be able to apply it. This often means looking to those who have already mastered the field and then breaking things down into their lowest denominators and working to understand why things were done in the exact way they were.

2. Learn proper technique

I’ve written about this before, and it applies in virtually every field. For some people proper technique is intuitive but for most it is not, which is why I feel that those who began formal training/coaching early, or intuitively gravitate towards the proper technique are said to have more “talent” in their area of expertise.

I believe that it is because these two things can be very difficult (yet not necessarily impossible) to master more than one field.
